SHOWNOTES (Outline)

Intro:

Today I wish to explore “how to be more assertive and confident in the workplace”

Like the last Pod I aim to give a you all a brief outline on:

1.     Why care?

2.    What is it?

3.    How it can affect your life?

4.    Who can benefit?

5.    Tips & Tricks - to help you achieve being more assertive and confident at work and gain better outcomes as a result.

Personal: (..on a person note) [00:01:37]

Feature:

1.    Why care? [00:03:17]

2.   What is it? [00:04:33]

3.   How can it affect your life? [00:06:55]

4.  Who can Benefit? [00:08:54] - Book Ref: "Principles" by Ray Dalio

5.   Tips & Tricks: [00:10:41]

As a caveat – this is neither a fully exhaustive nor all an encompassing and comprehensive list bar-none..... but one I think you will gain benefits from practising, experimenting and tucking a few of these ideas away in your mind the next time an opportunity arises in work to put forward your newly learned assertiveness.

The science of assertiveness is an ART...and careful negotiation on when best to use your new-found tool is going to take some well...trial & error and fumbles & stumbles...The key is to be consistent to oneself.

So, enough prevaricating....

In summary there are 7 Major areas to focus on:

1.    Know what you want

2.   Impressions

3.   Give a Reason

4.   Mindset

5.    Communication Jujitsu

6.   Social Interactions

7.    Practise makes Perfect

So, let’s go through them:

1.    Know what YOU want: [00:11:43]

2.   First Impressions: [00:13:32]

3.   Give a reason: [00:15:01]

4.  Mindset [00:17:33]

5.   Communication Jujitsu: [00:21:41]

o   A strategic Pause

o   Confident, Clear, Controlled

o   Use ‘I’.

o   Be honest with yourself and others

o   Do not give in to “Yes”

o   Renegotiate

o   A simple formula to try...

o   Ignored or interrupted..

o   Confident body language:

6.  Social Interactions [00:30:06]

7.    Practice makes perfect. [00:31:42]

6.  The “Take Away”: [00:32:53]

·      Remember it’s your life so be kind to yourself and ask for what you want. If you don’t...don’t expect anyone else will.

·      There is almost always a reasons’ why people do the things they do. It helps to consider the other person’s situation. What could have made them act this way? Have they always taken you for granted?

·      The tips and tricks above are a good start – you won’t get everything right the first, second or even the fifth time...it is a process – like learning any new skill....at the beginning it seemed impossible to conceive of reaching a point where being Assertive at work was even an option...though perseverance and giving it a go is a great start....

·      Be patient. Being assertive is a skill that needs practice. Remember that you will sometimes do better at it than at other times, but you can always learn from your mistakes.

·      Either be the Author of your own story or allow someone else to write it for you...
